Sgt Smith and Wife Tabitha
Sgt. Stephen "Mark" Smith was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq in 2006 as a member of 1st Battalion, 6th Marines.  On October 13th of that year, Sgt Smith was crossing a flooded road in chest deep water when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded beneath the surface.  While the water buffered some of the blast, Sgt Smith was seriously wounded and as a result lost a portion of his leg.  On his return for rehabilitation to the United States, first Bethesda and than Walter Reed, Sgt Smith eventually returned to Camp Lejeune where he now works in the armory at the School of Infantry.  Sgt Smith lives in Jacksonville with his wife Tabitha.
To honor the heroism, sacrifice, fortitude, and perseverence of Sgt Smith in overcoming the many obstacles that he has faced and to also honor the memory of LCpl Jordan Haerter who died for his brothers in arms, we are proud to say that we have named Mark as our 2010 recipient of a custom made Freedom Ryder handcycle.
Congratulations Mark and Tabitha!  Best of health and best of luck to you and your wonderful family in the many years to come!
