19 years old when he joined, Mr. Renner attended boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center where he was on the basketball team. He was assigned to the USS Tarawa while it was still in drydock in Boston MA and was on board for its shakedown cruise to Guantanamo Bay (GITMO) Cuba in 1955.
